As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even, death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.
Joe Bryant, the father of the late NBA Icon Kobe Bryant has died. Bryant, reportedly has been dealing with health issues, including a massive stroke. Known as “Jellybean,” Bryant was a first-round pick (14th overall) for the Golden State Warriors in 1975 NBA Draft. He also played for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers and Houston Rockets before heading overseas. Bryant’s fondness of the Jellybean candy led to his nickname and his son’s Kobe middle name “Bean.”
Bryant also spent time coaching overseas and was the Head Coach for the Los Angeles Sparks for 2 years (2005–2007). During the 2006 season, he led the Sparks to a 25–9 record and a spot in the WNBA Conference Finals.
Along with Kobe, Joe Bryant also has two daughters, Sharia and Shaya. He was 69 years old.
