As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even, death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.
Sheila Jackson-Lee, one of the most prominent Black members of Congress has passed away. Jackson-Lee announced last month she had been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and has battled Breast Cancer in the past.
With an illustrious career that spans decades, Jackson-Lee has dedicated herself to public service and the betterment of her community and the nation. Before ascending to the national stage, Sheila Jackson-Lee, made significant contributions at the local level. In 1987, he moved to Houston with her Husband where she would start her decades-long political career when she was appointed asa Houston, Texas municipal judge by then Mayor of Houston Kathy Whitmire until 1990.

In 1989 she won a at-large position on the Houston City Council, where she was known for her proactive approach to addressing local issues and her dedication to improving the lives of Houston residents. Jackson Lee served on the House Science Committee and on the Subcommittee that oversees space policy and NASA. She was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and a CBC whip.
In 1994, Sheila Jackson-Lee was elected to represent Texas’s 18th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University in 1972 andfFollowing her undergraduate studies, she earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1975.
Sheila Jackson-Lee’s tireless dedication to advocacy and legislative progress has made her a revered figure in Houston and beyond. Her educational background, early political career, and numerous legislative achievements highlight her unwavering commitment to public service.
