A recent study by The Vacationer predicted that driving would be the preferred mode of travel for 75% of American families this summer. According to the survey, most families plan to embark on at least one road trip, with many choosing destinations within 100 miles of home. Only about 21% intend to travel up to 250 miles away, and a smaller segment of 5.8% are aiming for trips exceeding 1,000 miles. As summer draws to a close, here are some enjoyable road trip ideas to consider for a memorable family adventure.

Consider exploring the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia, where you can immerse yourself in African American History at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, stroll through the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, and enjoy the city’s rich culinary scene.

Pack up the car and explore the historic streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, known for its unique blend of African, French, and Creole cultures—don’t miss out on the vibrant music scene and delicious Creole cuisine.

If you’re interested in history and relaxation, visit the city of Charleston, South Carolina, where you can explore the diverse Gullah culture and enjoy the serene beaches of nearby Kiawah Island. 

For a mix of adventure and culture, consider a trip to Washington, D.C., where you can visit the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and take a scenic boat ride along the Potomac River.

If you’re seeking relaxation and family bonding, consider renting a cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, a mountain range rising along the Tennessee–North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. While there, you can enjoy nature while engaging in family-friendly activities. 

Lastly, a trip to the culturally rich city of Houston, Texas, offers a chance to explore diverse neighborhoods, indulge in exceptional food, and visit attractions like the Houston Museum of African American Culture.
