An assistant principal at a Corsicana ISD school speaks publicly for the first time after a student attacked her, leaving her permanently blind in her right eye.
On Aug. 15, Candra Rogers was attacked by a student with a hanger while responding to a call that the attacker had harmed another Collins Intermediate School student.
The student began throwing chairs at Rogers, before reaching for the hanger and tossing it at her, hitting her in the eye.
“The hanger hit me in my right eye and knocked it out of the socket,” Rogers said. ” I grabbed my face while blood was pouring out of my head and stumbled out of the classroom door.”
Rogers was flown immediately to the hospital to get treated for her injuries. She faces the possibility of having her eye removed completely. As of right now there is no timetable for her return to work.
In a Tuesday press conference, Rogers stressed the need for better protection and safety resources for teachers and other faculty in classrooms.
“We should never have to fear being in a classroom with an aggressive student,” Rogers said. “Everyone’s protection is paramount. Overly aggressive students need services to meet their needs, but I do not believe the safety of other students and the educational staff should suffer.”
The student is an 11-year-old boy who was taken into custody following the attack. According to KSAT 12, the Navarro County District Attorney says the boy will likely face the equivalent of an adult’s aggravated assault charge in juvenile court.
