As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) approaches, voters must understand its significance and impact. The DNC is more than just a political event—it’s a pivotal moment where the Democratic Party outlines its vision for the country and officially nominates its candidate for president and vice president.
More: How Kamala Harris’ Candidacy Is Inspiring Young Black Voters In Texas
Next week’s convention in Chicago sets the tone for the general election and offers a platform for party leaders and delegates to debate and shape the party’s policies and priorities. By tuning in, you will gain insight into the party’s agenda, hear from key speakers, and understand the issues driving the election.
Engaging with the DNC helps voters make informed decisions and grasp the direction in which the party intends to lead the nation.
Here are a few things black voters should know ahead of the DNC.
The week-long convention garners extensive media coverage, shaping public perception and setting the stage for the general election. It provides a platform for the Democratic Party to connect with a wide audience through speeches, interviews, and promotional activities.
During the convention, delegates officially nominate the Democratic presidential candidate through voting by representatives from each state. However, Vice President Kamala Harris has already clinched the nomination with 99% of delegate support in a virtual roll call just six days after President Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her.
Televised speeches will be broadcast from Chicago’s United Center in the evenings while McCormick Place downtown will host meetings and handle official Democratic business.
The complete list of speakers is still being finalized, but we can confirm that President Joe Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be keynote speakers at the convention.
Additionally, Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, is confirmed to speak on behalf of his grandfather. Along with these elected officials, the spouses and other family members of the nominees frequently make appearances or give speeches. Additionally, everyday Americans are often allowed to share their personal stories, highlighting the themes and policies the nominee wishes to emphasize.
Delegates discuss and vote on the party platform, which sets out the party’s policies, principles, and priorities for the upcoming election. Harris has been vocal about her focus on wealth creation, racial equity, and improving access to capital. Specifically, her priorities include strengthening the middle class, lowering costs, protecting reproductive rights, relieving student loan debt, reducing U.S. climate pollution, and addressing asylum claims to manage crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border. Although she has toned down her earlier stance on “defunding the police,” she aims to be “tough and smart on crime.”
Cost of Living and Inflation: Inflation increases prices, requiring more money to purchase the same items. This can make it even more difficult for Black Americans to afford essentials such as housing and food, widening the wealth gap due to their lower incomes and higher costs.
Women’s Reproductive Rights: Women’s reproductive rights involve making choices about pregnancy and family planning, such as whether to have a baby. Access to these rights is crucial for Black Americans as it allows them to make decisions for their health and future. However, historically, they have faced more barriers in accessing this care. Reducing these barriers can improve their overall well-being and opportunities.
Criminal Justice, Policing, and Other Issues Involving Race: Black Americans can face unfair treatment by the police and justice system, such as being stopped more often or receiving harsher punishments. This can lead to fewer opportunities and increased stress in their lives. Fair rules and equal treatment will provide everyone with a better chance at success.
Project 2025: This is a plan to change how government and laws work in the U.S. Project 2025 could impact Black Americans by changing voting laws, potentially making it harder for them to vote. It might also affect criminal justice policies and social programs, which could lead to more challenges in areas like law enforcement, healthcare, and education. The exact impact will depend on how the plan is implemented.
Youth and Black Voter Engagement: The Democratic Party could improve youth and Black voter engagement by making sure they talk about the issues that matter most to these groups, like education and job opportunities. They could also make voting easier by setting up more events in communities and schools and using social media to connect with young people. This way, more people will feel included and motivated to vote.
