On Friday (Sep 6) a judge on delayed Donald Trump’s hush money sentencing until after the November election. This is new territory for U.S. voters who will now cast cast ballots without knowing whether Trump could face time behind bars for his conviction on more than 30 counts of falsifying business records earlier this year.

On May 30, Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in Manhattan, making him the first president in US history to become a convicted felon. According to CNN, the 34 counts stemmed from a series of invoices, vouchers and checks that made up reimbursement payments to Michael Cohen, who fronted $130,000 in hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the final weeks of the 2016 presidential election.

The jury reached its verdict after 9 and a half hours of deliberations.

At the time his conviction was announced, Trump remained defiant in his remarks, calling the court proceedings a “disgrace” and a “rigged trial,” he maintained his innocence.

In terms of the upcoming election, research suggests the tides may slowly be turning: According to a new poll published by the Guardian on Sept. 4, Vice President Kamala Harris now holds a slight lead over Trump, sliding past the Republican nominee by two points. But it’s too early to accurately predict who will secure the White House.

The Guardian’s latest polling data found that in comparison with past elections, Harris’ lead is narrower than the leads of previous challengers. For instance, during the 2016 election, Hillary Clinton led Trump by five points, and similarly, Joe Biden had a 6.3-point lead in 2020 against the 78-year-old Republican. While Biden was ultimately victorious, Clinton’s stunning loss to Trump in the 2016 presidential election was shaped by several factors.
