As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even, death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.
Fatman Scoop has died after suffering a medical emergency at a show in Connecticut, according to his tour manager.
On Friday night (August 30th) Scoop was rushed to the hospital after collapsing during a performance. The incident occurred at The Green and Gold Party summer concert at Town Center Park in Hamden, Connecticut. According to reports, CPR was administered on-site during the medical emergency before he was taken to the hospital. There is currently no update on his condition. Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett has asked the public to “please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.”
Fatman Scoop, born Isaac Freeman III, is renowned for his powerful voice and dynamic presence as a hype man. He gained widespread recognition with his 1999 hit single “Be Faithful,” featuring the Crooklyn Clan.
He also featured on Missy Elliott‘s hit “Lose Control,” alongside Ciara, which won a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video and was nominated for Best Rap Song. Scoop’s energetic ad-libs can also be heard on Mariah Carey‘s “It’s Like That.”
Additionally, Fatman Scoop’s voice is featured on the remix of Faith Evans‘ “Love Like This,” a staple in club and radio mixes.
