Donald Trump has just garnered a small victory ahead of his upcoming presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump is the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes. The case stems from “hush money” Trump paid porn actor Stormy Daniels to keep her from talking about a 2006 affair.
A judge in Manhattan announced today that Trump’s sentencing in the hush money conviction will be delayed until November 26, weeks after the November 5th Election Day. The original sentencing date was scheduled for September 18.
Trump’s lawyers argued to Judge Juan M. Merchan that sentencing before the common vote would amount to election interference.
On Tuesday a federal judge denied a request from Trump’s camp to have the U.S. District Court in Manhattan to take the case fro Judge Merchan’s state court. If that ruling were to be granted, Trump’s lawyers state that they would’ve sought to have the guilty verdict overturned based on grounds of presidential immunity.
From FOX 8:
Trump’s lawyers argued that delaying his sentencing until after the election would also allow him time to weigh next steps after Merchan rules on the defense’s request to reverse his conviction and dismiss the case because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s July presidential immunity ruling.
In his order Friday, Merchan delayed a decision on that until Nov. 12.
Despite the delayed sentencing, Trump’s team is already appealing the federal ruling.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
