As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even, death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.

Tyka Nelson, the sister of legendary musician Prince, died Monday (November 4th) morning. Her brother, President Nelson, confirmed her passing. No cause of death is available at this time. Nelson was also a singer and songwriter, releasing several albums. One of her most recognized songs was “Marc Anthony’s Tune,” which gained significant attention and reached number 33 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Her discography includes albums like “End of the Road” (2017) and “Hustler” (2011). According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Nelson recently announced her retirement from music and was working on a memoir.

Nelson was 64 years old.
