In a tragic incident during Tuskegee University’s 100th anniversary homecoming, one person has died and 16 others are injured following a mass shooting on campus. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that police responded to a shots fired call at West Commons, an apartment complex at 1200 West Montgomery Road.
An 18-year-old was confirmed dead at the scene. University officials have stated that the deceased was not a student of Tuskegee University, and the victim’s family has been notified.
Among the injured, 12 individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to hospitals in Montgomery and Lee counties. An additional four people suffered injuries that were not related to gunfire.
In response to the incident, Tuskegee University released a statement
Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is conducting an active investigation.
The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Classes scheduled for Monday, November 11th have been canceled, as law enforcement continues to investigate. Grief counselors will be available for students in the chapel to provide support during this difficult time.
