The suspected shooter was found dead in the building when police arrived.
The shooter was a 17-year-old female student, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.
The gun used was a 9 millimeter pistol, according to a law enforcement source.
The police department did not fire their weapons at any time.
Police are working to determine a motive and the suspect’s family is cooperating, according to Barnes.
A teacher and a student were killed. Six other people were injured, including two students who are in critical condition.
Madison Fire Chief Chris Carbon said some of the injured were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and others were taken to University of Wisconsin hospitals.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting, the White House said.
This marks at least the 83rd school shooting of 2024, surpassing 2023 for the most school shootings in a single year since CNN began tracking such shootings in 2008.

Three people are dead after a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, today.
Police say one of the dead is a juvenile who is believed to be the shooter. The suspected shooter was a student at the school.
Seven people were transported to hospitals from the scene.

Multiple injured in school shooting Monday morning at a private Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, according to reports.
The shooting broke out just before 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Christian School, a K-12 Christian school in the state’s capital, and multiple injuries were reported, according to Channel 3000.
Just before noon, local time, police said that the shooter was “down,” according to ABC News.
Police said in a statement:
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation”
