The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a recall involving organic eggs sold at Costco to its highest level. The agency believes consumers are at risk of being exposed to salmonella.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness, hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S.. The bacteria can wreak havoc and cause serious infections in children, elderly people and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
The FDA has bumped the recall involving Kirkland Signature brand organic pasture raised 24-count eggs to Class I. The agency said there’s reasonable concerns that exposure to the eggs will “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The Costco recall was first initiated on November 26. The FDA upgraded it to Class I on December 20. According to the recall notice, Handsome Brook Farms is the distributor. The company has voluntarily recalled the eggs “after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging.” Handsome Brook Farms said they are putting in place supply chain controls and retraining to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
The Kirkland eggs were sold to 25 Costco stores starting in late November in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The recall covers about 10,800 egg cartons with the UPC code 9661910980 and a “use by date” of January 6, 2025. The “use by date” is printed on the side.
If you have the eggs, you’re urged to not eat them, but return them to a local Costco store for a full refund or throw them away. No one has gotten sick so far from the affected eggs.
This latest recall follows a series of recent recalls on products such as carrots, cucumbers, ground beef and more.
