Apple users who’ve experienced the iPhone’s virtual assistant being activated without consent may soon be in for a payday following the tech giant’s agreement to a $95 million settlement.
A 2019 lawsuit claims Siri has been activated – and recorded conversations – without the device’s owner’s consent. The lawsuit also alleges that the recorded conversations were then sold to third parties.
On Tuesday, court records show a preliminary settlement was submitted in federal court that now awaits approval from a U.S. district judge.

The suit highlighted alleged examples detailed in a report from The Guardian, which said it had learned from contractors that recordings included conversations people had with their doctors, “drug deals,” and other intimate moments. Two plaintiffs in the case said they received targeted ads regarding Air Jordan shoes and Olive Garden after speaking about them near an Apple device with Siri, according to Reuters.
If the settlement is approved, anyone who’s owned an Apple device with Siri between September 17, 2014, through December 31, 2025, could be in line for a piece of the $95 million. But the actual payout amount may not be what you’re expecting.
Reports state that the max payout per device would be $20, though that amount could be adjusted based on several circumstances.
The next update about the settlement is expected to come by February 14, 2025.
This is a developing story.
