During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”He described the name change as appropriate.
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” Trump said. “That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”
Trump said that an official announcement about the change would be made soon. He justified the proposal by arguing that the U.S. conducts the majority of work in the region, implying a sense of ownership over the waters.
“Because we do most of the work there and it’s ours,” he said.In addition to discussing the renaming, Trump reiterated his stance on immigration, emphasizing the need to stop unauthorized entry into the United States. He also reaffirmed his threat to force tariffs on Mexico and Canada.
“Mexico’s really in trouble. A lot of trouble. It’s a very dangerous place,” Trump said.
The Gulf of Mexico borders several U.S. states, including Florida, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
