With the tragic death of Voletta Wallace today (Feb 21), it’s hard not to think of her connection to Sean “Diddy” Combs based on the multiple decades they worked together to preserve the legacy of her late son and rap legend, The Notorious B.I.G. We’d like to believe that if things were different, Diddy would currently be splurging on a larger-than-life tribute to a woman that for many years was boasted as a second mother.
As we’ve come to learn ever since his September 2024 arrest on multiple sex trafficking charges, we’re far removed from the theatrics when it comes to anything Combs-related. In an ironic twist though, it also appears one of his lawyers wants to be far removed as well from the case altogether. New York criminal defense attorney Anthony Ricco filed a Friday morning motion in court to officially withdraw as counsel.

More details on his reasoning below, which TMZ was able to get a clearer understanding of as to why Ricco feels unfit to continue:
“We’re getting more clarity on Anthony Ricco’s departure … sources with direct knowledge of the case tell us Ricco and Diddy’s relationship — or lack thereof — became an issue. We’re told Ricco felt he was unable to establish or maintain the kind of relationship he’d need to have with the client in order to “effectively” defend him.
It’s still unclear why exactly Ricco didn’t feel closer to Diddy.”
The outlet was also contacted by sources within Diddy’s camp, who claim it’s just a simple case of legal language making things seem blown out of proportion, stating, “The rules of professional conduct require him to say things that might sound dramatic, and unlike the way people normally speak.” The source went on to conclude, “There’s no crisis.” Interestingly enough, court sketches from the pretrial hearing on October 10, 2024 (seen below) depict Ricco and Combs embracing for a hug. Seemed pretty established to us!
With just a few months until the trial begins, paired with a staggering amount of sex assault lawsuits coming by-the-hour via the infamous Tony Buzbee, we’re just simply not prepared for the potential of what can come next. Unfortunately, the case against Diddy is already proving to be getting worse by the day.

As we’ve come to understand year after year, day after day even, death is unfortunately an inevitable part of life. Still, as much of a fact as that may be, the blow of experiencing loss never gets any easier, nor does reporting on the subject in Black culture.
