Roberta Flack, the legendary singer renowned for her soulful R&B vocals, passed away this morning (Feb 24th) at the age of 88. Her family confirmed in a statement that she died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. A classically trained pianist and vocalist, Flack’s contributions to music transcend generations, leaving an enduring legacy of emotive artistry.
Born in Black Mountain, North Carolina, Flack’s musical talent was evident from a young age. She began studying piano at 9 and later earned a full scholarship to Howard University at just 15, becoming one of its youngest students. Her career soared when Clint Eastwood featured her rendition of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in his 1971 film Play Misty for Me. The emotional ballad became a chart-topping hit and earned her the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1973.
Flack continued to dominate the 1970s with classics like “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” both securing her Grammy wins. Her collaborations with Donny Hathaway, including “Where Is the Love” and “The Closer I Get to You,” further elevated her to superstar status, showcasing her ability to connect deeply with audiences through her music.
