Donald Trump never ceases to amaze me, and by “never ceases to amaze me,” I mean, would y’all come and look at this mess?
There used to be a time when Republicans hid the fact that they were card-carrying members of the white supremacy upholders club, but that seems like eons ago. Now, not only do Republicans remain silent about the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, but it looks like the president wants to find a way to pay insurrectionists for terrorizing the country and threatening to hang the then vice president.
According to Politico, Trump isn’t just bragging about pardoning the folks who stormed the Capitol, beat up police officers, and took photos in Congress members’ offices; he’s now looking at getting them financially compensated.
“A lot of the people that are in the government now talk about it because a lot of the people in government really like that group of people [Jan 6. defendants],” Trump said during an appearance on NewsMax.
The president added that he’s been trying to take care of them and is possibly looking at compensating them with a “compensation fund.” He also described the raging mad insurrectionists as protesting “peacefully and patriotically” on that day because Donald Trump is a liar.
Those people were a lot of things on that day, but “peaceful and patriotic” are not how most of us would describe them.
While Trump didn’t state explicitly where the funds would come from, we can assume that these would be taxpayer dollars taking care of people who literally tried to overthrow the government because America is no longer a serious place.
Trump still speaks glowingly of slain rioter Ashli Babbit. He calls himself a “big fan” of the woman who was shot and killed by police during the storming of the Capitol.
“Ashli Babbitt was a really good person who was a big MAGA fan, Trump fan. And she was innocently standing there, they even say trying to sort of hold back the crowd,” Trump said. “And a man did something to her that was unthinkable when he shot her.”
Sir, she wasn’t “innocently standing there” or trying to hold back a crowd; she was attempting to climb through the shattered glass of a door that led to the speaker’s lobby and was being protected by an officer who, after several verbal commands for her to stop, opened fire.
But I know Donald Trump doesn’t care for the truth when he’s weaving a tale, so we move on.
The funny part about all of this is that the one place where America seems not to be divided is that we all mutually despise the Jan. 6 rioters.
“The president’s least popular action is his decision to pardon all those convicted of crimes in the wake of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. More than 8 in 10 oppose the pardons for those who were convicted of violent crimes,” a Washington Post-Ipsos poll released last month found.
Eighty-three percent of Americans agree that pardoning violent criminals who injured police officers and sent both Democrat and Republican members of Congress scrambling for their lives was just plain dumb.
And now the president of people who wear hats that can hold beers wants to pay these people for their willingness to attempt a coup on his behalf — possibly using our money to do so — because this presidency is a dictatorship, and dictators love loyalists. It is a shame that we’ve become an embarrassment, but sadly, that’s exactly who we are. America is a joke at this point, and other civilized nations are laughing at us and the man in the Oval Office with the spray tan permanently set to tangerine.
