President Trump has decided to hit the pause button on those hefty 25% tariffs for goods from Mexico and Canada that fall under the 2020 trade deal. This means these tariffs, initially set to kick in soon, are now on hold until April 2.
The President mentioned he had a chat with Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, which played a part in this decision. He also had discussions with leaders from major U.S. automakers like Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, leading to a one-month tariff break for the auto industry.
This move is seen as a way to give businesses a bit more breathing room to adapt to the changing trade landscape. However, it’s worth noting that while these specific tariffs are paused, other tariffs, especially those targeting China, are still in effect.
In response, Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to their northern border to help curb drug trafficking, and the U.S. has pledged to take measures to reduce weapons trafficking into Mexico.
So, for now, businesses importing goods from Mexico and Canada under the USMCA can breathe a sigh of relief, at least until April 2.
