Stocks Plummet Amid Recession Fears and Trade War Tensions

U.S. stocks took a severe hit on Monday as economic concerns mounted, with investors worrying about the potential for a recession. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 890 points, or 2.1%, ending at 41,912, while the S&P 500 fell 2.7%, its worst day of the year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was hit even harder, losing 728 points, or 4%. Tesla’s shares plummeted by more than 15%, and major tech stocks like Alphabet, Apple, and Nvidia saw declines of about 5%.

The sharp declines followed growing concerns over President Trump’s aggressive trade policies, which are intensifying fears of an economic slowdown. The trade war with China escalated as Beijing imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural products, including chicken, wheat, and soybeans. Additionally, Ontario, Canada, announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the U.S., responding to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.

Market sentiment has been souring since February, driven by concerns about slowing growth, the Trump administration’s pro-tariff agenda, and high market valuations. Analysts at Vital Knowledge noted that investor psychology has worsened, with many selling off stocks in response to the heightened uncertainty.

Goldman Sachs downgraded its U.S. economic growth forecast for 2025 from 2.4% to 1.7%, citing the impact of escalating tariffs. The White House maintains that tax cuts and tariffs will ultimately bolster the economy, but investor confidence is shaken, especially after last week’s market rout—the worst since Trump’s re-election.

Economists predict inflation could rise this year due to the ongoing trade disputes. Meanwhile, analysts at Oxford Economics warned that the risks of slower growth have become more pressing than concerns over inflation. Despite the uncertainty, some investors still support Trump’s pro-growth agenda, though many are unsettled by the chaotic policymaking approach.
