TikTok’s Fate Could Be Decided Soon, Says VP JD Vance
Looks like the long-running TikTok drama might finally be wrapping up. U.S. Vice President JD Vance expects the main details of a deal over the app’s ownership to come together before the April 5 deadline, according to two White House officials.
If you haven’t been keeping up, here’s the gist: A law that went into effect on January 19 requires TikTok’s parent company, China-based ByteDance, to sell the app over national security concerns—or face a U.S. ban.
After taking office on January 20, President Donald Trump hit pause on the enforcement of that law, signing an executive order that pushed the deadline back by 75 days. Meanwhile, he put Vance and national security adviser Michael Waltz in charge of handling the potential sale.
Over the weekend, Trump mentioned that his team is talking to four different groups interested in buying TikTok. Vance, in an interview with NBC News aboard Air Force Two, sounded confident that they’ll have a framework in place soon. “There will almost certainly be a high-level agreement that I think satisfies our national security concerns and allows there to be a distinct American TikTok enterprise,” he said.
Of course, even if they reach a deal by April 5, there could still be more details to iron out. For now, though, it looks like TikTok’s future in the U.S. is getting closer to being settled.
No word yet from TikTok or ByteDance on the situation, but we’ll see how this all plays out!
