A 20-year-old student, identified as Phoenix Ikner, has been accused of being the gunman behind the Florida State University shooting that resulted in two deaths and six injuries.
Ikner, believed to be a student at FSU, is the son of a deputy who served the Leon County Sheriff’s Office for over 18 years.
He was carrying a handgun that used to be a service weapon for the sheriff’s office, which his mother had purchased.
Sheriff Walter McNeil told reporters that the suspect was “steeped in the Leon County Sheriff’s Office family and engaged in a number of training programs that we have, so it’s not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons.”
Ikner’s motive for the shooting remains unknown as he is currently hospitalized and not speaking.
Prior to attending FSU, Ikner was enrolled at Tallahassee State College and reportedly a registered Republican, according to Florida voter registration records.
