Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced Sunday. The cancer has been classified with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating a serious case. However, the disease is hormone-sensitive, which allows for several effective treatment options.

Biden, 82, underwent further medical evaluation after a small nodule was discovered in his prostate. He and his family are currently exploring treatment paths with his doctors. In a statement on social media, Biden said, “Cancer touches us all… Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, second only to skin cancer. According to the CDC, about 13 out of every 100 men will be diagnosed with it during their lifetime. Age is the most significant risk factor.

Despite the seriousness of Biden’s diagnosis, experts note that prostate cancer often responds well to treatment. Dr. Tanya Dorff of City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center emphasized that even advanced cases can be managed, allowing patients to maintain a good quality of life for many years.
